PM Modi to host Oman Sultan next week, talks on West Asia likely | India News

NEW DELHI: In the first high-profile visit by an Arab leader to India since the Israel-Hamas war broke out, the Sultan of Oman, Haitham bin Tarik, will be hosted by PM Narendra Modi in the middle of this month. Oman is India’s closest defence partner in the Arabian Gulf, and also a key Indian Ocean maritime security partner which has allowed the Indian Navy access to the strategic Port of Duqm, but the visit will draw attention also for the sultan’s talks with Modi on the West Asia situation.
Modi has been keen on hosting the sultan and NSA Ajit Doval had delivered a message from the PM to Tarik when he travelled to Muscat in June this year. The sultan, who lands here on December 16, will hope to use the visit to make up for his absence at the G20 summit, where Oman, India’s oldest strategic partner in the region, was one of the guest countries invited by India.
India has been in touch with Oman over the issue with foreign minister S Jaishankar having spoken to his counterpart Badr Albusaidi in October. The Oman minister had sought an immediate ceasefire during the conversation, along with continued supplies of humanitarian aid and respect for international law to save civilian lives.
While strongly condemning the October 7 Hamas terror attacks, India has been careful not to antagonise its Arab partners by expressing support for international humanitarian law, the two-state solution and by condemning the deaths of civilians.
With defence cooperation emerging as the key pillar of its strategic partnership with Oman, the Indian government sees the Sultanate as its closest defence partner in the region. Oman was the first Gulf country to hold joint exercises with all 3 wings of the Indian armed forces. Of particular significance to India has been the access Oman has allowed India to the strategically located Duqm port in the southeast, amid growing Chinese footprints in the Indian Ocean. There’s also a strong presence of the Indian community in Oman with close to 700,000 Indian nationals living there.

PUNE/NEW DELHI: In keeping with the government’s directive to shed “vestiges of the colonial era”, the Navy will now “Indianise” its ranks for personnel below officer rank (PBOR), while senior officers will don epaulettes highlighting the “heritage and legacy” of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
PM Narendra Modi announced these changes at the Navy Day celebrations in Sindhudurg in Maharashtra on Monday.
“Inspired by the ideals of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the India of today is moving forward abandoning the slavery mentality. The epaulettes donned by our naval officers will now highlight the heritage and legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as the new epaulettes will be similar to the naval ensign,” Modi said.

Don't vent anger of defeat in Parliament, learn from it: PM Modi to opposition | India News

PM: State poll results a boost for those working for common man
But, at least, do not turn this temple of democracy into a platform for expressing frustration. And I say this again, based on my long experience, change your approach a bit, leave the confrontational attitude aside just for the sake of opposition, and contribute positively for the country’s benefit, Modi said, an apparent reference to frequent disruptions in the House leading to adjournments, which take a toll on Parliament’s productivity.

He was greeted with chants of “Baar baar Modi sarkar, teesri baar Modi sarkar” by party members in Lok Sabha during the brief proceedings of the House before it was adjourned for an hour. The PM’s remarks on the inaugural day of new sessions have very often been cryptic, limited to appeals for cooperation for ensuring smooth conduct of proceedings.
A day after BJP’s success, he appeared to be relaxed and even joked with reporters about the late onset of winter. “It is not that cold yet. Winter is approaching slowly. But the political temperature has been rising,” he said, adding that results on Sunday were encouraging.
Modi again attacked what he called the “politics of negativity” while speaking in the evening at the Navy Day celebrations in Sindhudurg in Maharashtra. Urging lawmakers to debate shortcomings, the PM said the growing hatred in the country over certain issues might turn into love through such actions. “So, there is an opportunity, don’t let it slip away. The country has rejected negativity,” he added.
The PM said the assembly poll results were encouraging for those who were committed to the well-being of the common man, and who were dedicated to the bright future of the country, especially for women, youth, farmers and the poor, the four “castes” he has referred to in his recent speeches, seen as a counter to the opposition’s appeal for a caste census.
Modi said those who follow the principles of empowering these four important “castes” and ensuring their bright future and last mile delivery of concrete plans received strong support. “When there is good governance and consistent support for public welfare, the term ‘anti-incumbency’ becomes irrelevant. Some may call it pro-incumbency, good governance, transparency, national interest, or solid plans for public welfare, but this has been the experience that we have been witnessing consistently. And today we are meeting in this new temple of the Parliament after such an excellent public mandate,” he said.
He also said that there might be shortcomings in the new Parliament building and urged everyone to point them out, adding that the Vice-President and speaker were fully vigilant towards these things.

Shah Rukh Khan has earned right to speak when he needs to: Karan Johar on SRK's absence on 'Koffee with Karan' | Hindi Movie News

Film maker Karan Johar on Monday said his superstar friend Shah Rukh Khan will not be appearing in the current season of popular celebrity chat show, “Koffee with Karan“. Shah Rukh was a regular on the chat show but has stayed away from it in the last few seasons. Johar said as a friend he understands and respects Shah Rukh’s decision and will approach him when the “time is right”.
“I just know if there is any megastar who has earned his right to speak when he needs to, it is Shah Rukh Khan. I, of all the people, have been his closest friend and family and should understand that. I have that leverage because he is family to me,” the filmmaker said at an event of “Koffee With Karan”.
“I can ask him and request him and he has never said no to me. So, I never asked because I know he didn’t want to be in that situation of dilemma, where he has to say no to me. I pick and choose what I ask for,” he said.
Johar, who has collaborated with SRK on various films such as “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai”, “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham”, and “My Name is Khan”, among others, is currently hosting the eighth season of the popular chat show on Disney+Hotstar.
This season had guests like Ranveer Singh and Deepika PadukoneSunny Deol and Bobby Deol, Sara Ali Khan and Ananya Panday, Alia Bhatt and Kareena Kapoor, Siddharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawanand Rani Mukherjee and Kajol.
Johar said he is also waiting for the right time to invite the superstar on the show.
SRK has not given any media interviews in the last four years, except for promotional press events and #AskSRK sessions on social media.

Shah Rukh Khan claims no 1 spot in IMDb’s list of 10 most popular Indian stars, Alia Bhatt & Deepika Padukone follow

Johar, 51, said Shah Rukh is an “extraordinary” orator and someone he looked upon as an elder brother.
“When the right time is there, I will ask him. I know when he has to want to speak, he will. When he does, it’ll be extraordinary because no one gives interviews better than Shah Rukh Khan. Nobody speaks better than him,” he said.
“When he speaks on a global platform or a national platform, he is just the wizard of words. He is truly the emperor not just on screen but off screen. There’s a lot of collective love for him, because of the man he has been to us off screen,” Johar said.

Johar said he speaks with Shah Rukh every other day.
“I don’t miss him that way, because I have ‘Koffee with Karan’ with him every night. Almost every evening, Shah Rukh, Gauri, his family and I meet. I’m having those conversations. I understand why you might miss him, but I’m satiated because he’s a big, huge part of my existence,” he added.
Talking about the show that has often put celebrities and Johar in a tight spot because what’s said during the rapid fire round, the filmmaker said they once thought about removing the segment.
He added that the guests have now grown more circumspect about what they say on the show over a period of time.
“We kept coming back to finding a replacement to rapid fire and the sad thing is people are much more worried now than they were in the first few seasons. Nobody wants a PR nightmare. Everyone is so careful that you have to make sure that you change the language of rapid fire so that you will get something,” Johar said.
“There were times when people have answered with abandon, like most underrated and overrated, and answers were flowing. Today, I won’t answer those so how can I expect them? We all have built a sensitive climate. Social media has made us so much more sensitise with sensitivity. So, everyone is sensitive about what they are saying, what they are expected to say, fan clubs get angry, I don’t want any of that,” he added.
In response to a question regarding the editing of certain scenes from “Koffee with Karan” episodes, the director stated he has never removed anything that could have “repercussions and ramifications”.
“I’ve kept things that maybe, in retrospect, I shouldn’t have….We cut out the boring banter. But things of consequence we have never to cut out. I’ve never asked to remove anything that I’ve said that is too personal or perhaps an opinion, which will have repercussions and ramifications, and it’s all there. There’s proof of that,” he said.
